An Insight into Trade and Investment in East Africa
This highly rated panel was powered by Afreximbank who convened a trade panel which discussed development trends in East Africa and the role HR leaders have in promoting intra-EAC trade, talent mobility and development. This insightful session was crucial for the audience as it explored HR issues in relation to broader regional goals and challenged HR professionals to think of their roles in enhancing the economic reality of the region. The key take aways were:
Talent mobility is a key issue in the region and although countries such as Ethiopia have taken exciting strides into creating a borderless East Africa with visa on arrival, there is still much to be desired.
To achieve economic objectives, learning and development and developing local talent is of utmost importance. Sharing cross-border experience is crucial to strengthening regional bonds and securing economic success .
Key trends such as the development of the AfCFTA and the increase in globalisation means businesses cannot afford to work in national silos but must be regional.
Regional integration and economic success will be difficult to achieve, as many of the hindrances are due to circumstances outside the remit of HR, but this is not without exception. HR professionals need to be resilient and creative to surpass these issues.
Do You Know Your HiPos?
This well-received panel was moderated by Dr Ben Ngoye, Professor, Strathmore Business School who was joined by four HR leaders; Jean-Patrick Habyarimana, HR Manager, Afreximbank, Lyn Mengich, Chairperson of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, Edna Malavolonek, Head of HR Africa, Aggreko and Isioma Okolo, HR Business Partner for the Horn and East Africa, Maersk. The participants offered valuable insights into a range of topics relating to high potential talent and tackled many popular issues surrounding these programs. The audience loved this session and commented on the high quality of the discussion. Key take aways from the session were:
When developing a HiPo program, first identify its key objectives and align these to business goals. Secondly, design a robust process that defends against potential bias.
Always maintain a transparent process throughout the development of HiPo programs to ensure employee buy-in.
When identifying HiPo programs, consider gender differences as women tend to be underestimated both by their managers and themselves. Mentoring programs and events where women in senior positions give advice can combat these misconceptions.
A common mistake when developing HiPo programs is ignoring core talent who are not characterised as HiPos. It is important to ensure similar programs are run to develop core talent to avoid disengagement.
If HiPos leave the organisation, ensure you maintain a good relationship. This serves to grow your potential partners, but also ensures the HiPo is part of a strong brand ambassador network.
